I was thinking the same thing when I realized that separate pricing is still on some magazines with the Canadian usually 40-50% higher.
Where would you direct this complaint?

What is baffling about this is that it is out of sync with the realities of changing market conditions. It’s hard to believe that any retailer in the face of a sudden shift in market factors would not make significant moves to alter pricing. Gas prices change if a fly sneezes in Liberia. Housing prices are constantly changing. So why is it that JK Rowling, her publisher, and the retailer get the privilege of extracting an extra 27% revenue from our wallets for no good reason other than they didn’t price the book according to current market conditions in Canada? I think anyone would be hard pressed to come up with a plausible rationale for the additional 27% based on inflation and labour costs factors.

Companies usually use a rolling quarterly fx adjustments – yearly being the norm. So book publishers should start passing on the C$ savings after a steady year of appreciation of the C$ vs. the US$. However the griping start when you don’t see any movement after a year and things are still set like the C$ was worth US$0.65.

I wouldn’t expect book publishers to change their prices on a weekly, monthly or even quarterly basis, but to not keep pace with a changing FX rate on the downside smacks of opportunism. Prices are sticky on the downside and they take advantage of that.

The fix would be for a massive book smuggling operation to commence and let natural arbitrage fix the price difference. That is what would happen in classical economic theory. I guess in neo-classical, people stop buying books because they know they are getting ripped off and start getting their supplies through the internet forcing a decrepit old industry to change its archaic ways. *cough* music industry *cough*
